Many Italians are not much better at speaking English than than the British and Americans who come here every year are at speaking Italian so a little knowledge of the language can go a long way, especially if you find yourself off the beaten path. Engaging with Italians as you travel around the country is both fun and rewarding and isn't that really the whole point of foreign travel?
