The last rays of the setting sun illuminating Todi

10 Day Tour Itinerary

DAY 1: Pick-up from Rome airport and transfer to a boutique hotel near Todi in Umbria in time for lunch and an afternoon guided walk around town. Todi will be our base for the first 3 nights.

Orvieto
The western approach to Orvieto where the magnificent cathedral dominates the skyline

DAY 2: We'll spend a full day in Orvieto, our joint favorite town in all of central Italy together with Ascoli Piceno, which we will visit on Day 8. As well as the obvious beauty of this Umbrian town and its magnificent cathedral above ground, you will also see the 2,500 years of Orvieto history on a walking tour underground.

DAY 3: Assisi will be our first destination in the morning followed by lunch in Spello (above right photo) and a wine tasting near Montefalco. Before completing the clockwise loop back to Todi for dinner we'll stop for cocktails in Spoleto (above left photo).

Gubbio
The 14th century Palace of the Consols in Piazza Grande, Gubbio

Madrevite winery
Our favorite winery in north-west Umbria

DAY 4: Today we complete the Umbrian leg of this tour with a visit to Gubbio and then we cross over into northern le Marche to Urbino, the town that Federico da Montefeltro built at the height of the Renaissance. It languished neglected for centuries until restored to its former glory in the last 65 years.

This evening we'll check into our hotel for the next 3 nights in Sirolo, a charming village situated on the most scenic section of the entire Marche coastline, nestled against the Monte Conero promontory.

Urbino
The Palazzo Ducale in Urbino

DAYS 5 & 6: After a hectic day yesterday the next two days will be much more relaxing with very little traveling time. We'll enjoy Sirolo in the morning sun over the Adriatic and its views of the Conero and make a short trip to the fascinating town of Treia, with its medieval walls and historic Piazza della Repubblica at its center, as well as to the large caverns of the Grotte di Frassasi with their impressive natural rock formations.

Conero promontory

Close to Sirolo is also the heart of the Verdicchio white wine country, within which the Cupramontana area has some of the most attractive countryside in Italy. We'll organize a winery visit here or, if the preference is for red wine, we can stay in the Sirolo area and enjoy a lunch at one of the many wineries within the Conero DOCG zone that produce excellent Montepulciano and Sangiovese blends.

DAY 7: For the final 3 nights of the tour we'll transfer to a winery estate near Offida in southern Marche with stops along the way to see the coastal towns of Torre di Palme and Grottammare and lunch in the atmospheric hilltop town of Ripatransone at the Enoteca of the Colli Ripani Cantina.

Grottammare

DAYS 8 & 9: These two days will also be very relaxing with very little time in the van so we can enjoy the peaceful countryside around our winery accommodation. As well as Offida itself, Ascoli Piceno will be the main attraction and also there will be time to visit Civitella del Tronto just across the border in Abruzzo. Both locations are no more than 3o mins away from our base.
